Pet Insurance: Is It Really Worth It?

Are pet insurances ever worth it, most people probably wonder. We can never get a better perspective than from the standpoint of veterinarians, themselves. Let’s take a look at what they have to say.

Pet insurance, veterinarians claim, doesn’t really get the attention that it should be getting. For instance, most people would rather save money in the bank than actually invest on actual pet insurance premiums. Veterinarians don’t think this is a great idea.

In general, people get insurance so they will be able to pay for expenses that are unexpected and most of the time, also large. Pet health savings accounts are okay, but you apparently shouldn’t choose them in lieu of pet insurance. For example, if your pet suddenly gets sick with something pretty serious, you’d probably have to shell out several thousand dollars. If you only had a savings plan, you’d most probably be short. An insurance, however, is a lot handier. Although most pet owners would say this is an unrealistic example, veterinarians say this has happened many times already.

Another one major complaint when it comes to pet insurance is its exclusions, such as chronic problems, genetics, etc that makes the whole thing apparently not worth it. However, there are a lot of new insurance companies nowadays that have vast coverage. Policies can even be customized.

Now if you’ve already had an experience where you’d had to shell out a lot of money for an unplanned circumstance your pet had to go through, it is more likely for you to buy an insurance. However, if you haven’t experienced such and if your pets have rather been on the healthy side, you’d think the whole idea is a waste of money. The truth, though, is that you can never really predict the future. For pet owners who do not want to spend a lot for their pet when sick, insurance may not be the best for you. Some probably just euthanize the pet. Pet owners who really love their pets though (most of them, in this case) have been found out, through surveys, to be willing to spend “any amount” to save their pets. 

Overall, pet insurance really do have lots of advantages, but it still makes you pay for what you probably think you can live without. It serves its purpose, though. It insures. From them on, it really depends on the pet owner.
